I am definitely one fo those entomologists that encourages his beetles to catch themselves! I am a big advocate of various traps and when I am in the field, I spend 90% of my collecting time either setting or retrieving traps. The reason for this is probably that I have never had very good success with other collecting methods and that the beetles I am interested in can mostly be successfully trapped. I have scarcely ever collected good beetles by sweeping, beating foliage or turning logs! There are however a few instances when I will use a net, such as collecting very active tiger beetles or jewel beetles from logs. I’ll discuss and illustrate some of the traps that I use here.
